Make the Most of Your Space
When it comes to renting a storage unit, you want to make the most of the space you have available. That's where shelving systems and overhead brackets come in handy. Before you start moving your belongings into the storage unit, set up shelving systems along the walls. The shelves will allow you to store boxes and bins out of the way, leaving the main area of the unit open for larger objects, such as furniture. If you're going to be storing bikes, use the ceiling beams as additional storage space. Placing overhead brackets on the ceiling beams will allow you to hang your bikes up so that they're out of the way.
Pest-Proof the Unit
You never know when rodents and other pests are going to find their way into your storage unit. Even if the onsite management conducts routine pesticide applications on the outside of the units, your storage space could still suffer from pest invasions. This is particularly true if your storage neighbors – those who are renting the adjoining units – happen to bring pests with them. To prevent pest problems inside your storage unit, you'll need to provide your own pest control methods.
First, apply a pesticide to the interior edges of your storage unit. Second, place rodent traps just inside the storage unit. You don't want to place traps in the back since you might not be able to get to them once your unit is filled with your belongings. Finally, don't store important papers or clothing in cardboard boxes. Use plastic storage bins, instead. Pests will have a harder time getting into the plastic storage bins.
Protect Against Water Damage
If you live in an area that experiences torrential rains, you'll want to protect your storage unit against water damage. You don't want flood waters seeping under the door and ruining your belongings. To protect against water damage, raise the storage floor by placing pallets on the ground. The pallets will keep your belongings off the ground and away from the water.
