About Me
Long Term Storage Success

After spending years trying to find a great job, I was finally offered the gig of my dreams. It felt like I was walking on a cloud, until they told me that I would have to relocate to halfway around the world. I was really frustrated, so I decided that it might be best to see about renting a long term storage facility. I didn't want to risk dealing with problems stemming from leaving belongings with a friend or family member, so I worked hard to find an excellent storage facility that would work well. I was able to find a facility that offered long-term units, and they really seemed to understand my needs. This blog is all about storing successfully for as long as you need to.

Protecting Your Fine China When It Needs To Be Moved To A New Location

Andy Lopez

If you had inherited a set of fine china dishes, you most likely enjoy using it for special occasions or display it in a cabinet for others to admire. Moving your china dishes will require you take some precautionary steps in how it is packaged so you do not end up with pieces that become chipped or shattered. Here are some tips you can use to ensure your treasures remain in the best of shape when they need to be transported to a new location.

Get The Right Enclosures For The Pieces

It is best to use a new corrugated cardboard box to house your dishes. Using a box that was used in the past is risky as there may be portions of the cardboard that had become weakened from the weight of prior items pushing against it. A plastic storage bins is another option to consider. This is less likely to become crushed while in a moving truck and will not have the risk of ripping.

Protect Your Dishes With Plenty Of Cushioning

Add several inches of foam packing peanuts to the bottom of your selected enclosure to help cushion your dishes from unnecessary breakage. Each plate will need to be wrapped in a piece of bubble wrap to help keep it safe. Use packing tape to secure the wrap around each item.

Cut several pieces of cardboard a bit smaller than the measurements of the bottom of the box. Set one of these pieces of cardboard on top of the packing peanuts and then set a wrapped dish on top of it. Place another piece of cardboard on top of the dish. Continue this procedure, staggering bubble-wrapped dishes and pieces of cardboard until the stack reaches a few inches from the top rim of the box. Add more packing peanuts on top of the dish on the top of the pile.

Secure Your Containers And Label Them Appropriately

Use heavy-duty packing tape to secure any cardboard box flaps so they do not open while the dishes are in transit. It is best to add tape to all edges of the box. If you are using a plastic storage container, it will have a lid to keep your dishes safely inside. This will need to be taped to the main portion of the container to keep it from jarring from its location. Label your box or bin as "fragile" and indicate dishes are inside. This will alert the moving company to be especially careful when handling the container.
