Long Term Storage Success

After spending years trying to find a great job, I was finally offered the gig of my dreams. It felt like I was walking on a cloud, until they told me that I would have to relocate to halfway around the world. I was really frustrated, so I decided that it might be best to see about renting a long term storage facility. I didn't want to risk dealing with problems stemming from leaving belongings with a friend or family member, so I worked hard to find an excellent storage facility that would work well. I was able to find a facility that offered long-term units, and they really seemed to understand my needs. This blog is all about storing successfully for as long as you need to.

Preparing Your RV For An Extended Stay In A Storage Facility

Andy Lopez

If you recently purchased a recreational vehicle, and you live in an area where you are unable to keep it on your property, you most likely rented a storage unit made especially for containing your vehicle when it is not in use. When you plan on storing your vehicle for a long period of time, it will be necessary to take some additional steps in preparing it for a stay. Here are some tips you can use to get your RV ready for several months of storage time.

Remove All Food From The Interior Of Your Vehicle

When you store your vehicle for smaller stints of time, you may keep it stocked with necessary food so you can take it out on the road at a moment's notice. While storing food in your vehicle is not a good idea because of the risk of a pest invasion, storing it for an extended time period makes it even more risky that your vehicle will sustain damage from pests or spoilage. Clean out your vehicle's cabinets and refrigerator in their entirety to remove any crumbs so pests are less likely to try to gain entry to your vehicle. This will also ensure there are no mold problems or offensive odors when you arrive to your storage unit to retrieve your vehicle in the future.

Check All Fluid Levels Before The Vehicle Is To Be Stored

It is a good idea to take the time to maintain your vehicle's liquids before it goes to the storage facility for a long time. Add a gas additive to your gas tank to aid in eliminating the chance of a buildup of moisture in your tank due to weather conditions and lack of use. Changing oil before a stay will ensure it does not become clumpy due to changing temperatures as well. Maintaining your fluids before storing your vehicle will also allow you to take it out on the road right away if desired.

Consider Using A Large Tarp To Keep Your Vehicle Clean

Think about purchasing a large tarp to place over your vehicle after you pull it into your storage unit. This will help in keeping your vehicle clean as dust will settle upon the tarp instead of on your vehicle. A tarp will also be effective in keeping pests from getting through small cracks to get into the interior of your vehicle. A tarp can be draped over your vehicle and then tied into place to secure it for the duration of the vehicle's stay.
